Show and Tell: Rolled Flowers

Testing a cut file to make a rolled paper rose wreath

I almost always test cut projects out of 80# white smooth coverstock.

This project came to me from my Pinterest feed, and landed me at Unoriginal Mom’s post on Paper Rosette Wreaths.

She credits another crafter for the inspiration. (Side note: I totally love the craft blog community. It doesn’t feel competitive as much as it feels cooperative.)

In her post, Unoriginal Mom is even friendly enough to give away her cut file.

Which works perfectly. I test cut several flowers of various sizes. They are easy to assemble. And I can see how her process of making all the flowers and gluing them while binge-watching TV and then assembling the wreath would work.

But I can also see I’m not going to follow through with this one. I’m sure it would be worth it, but I don’t want to end up with a big paper bag of roses that never become anything.

I do have visions of cutting them out of pastel paper and making magnets or gift wrap toppers.

Googly Eyed Magnets

A glue gun, googly eyes and magnets make a quick and happy craft

There are craft projects that I take a good amount of time working toward. Reading web tutorials, browsing Etsy, waiting for a sale on the items I need.

And then there are those that just click.

It’s February in KC, and its been gloomy for weeks. Today it is sunny and unseasonably warm. We have the doors and windows open, and a bike ride in on the agenda.

And I found myself sorting the craft drawers, and stumbled upon this enormous bag of googly eyes that my sister gave me for my birthday a couple of years ago (long story, only funny to us).

I have a brand new glue gun. And I found three perfectly good magnets at the bottom of that drawer as well.

There aren’t really instructions here – pick googly eyes at least as large as your magnet, apply hot glue, let dry. Repeat.

Instant happiness. How can you not smile with those things staring at you from the magnetic dry erase board?

Olive You – A Valentine’s Card

Two things you need to know about me:

I love a good pun
I really don’t like olives

Sometimes I let the olive part slide – small black olive slices are fine on a pizza. If there are chunks in a salad but they can hide in the lettuce, OK. Also, my olive ban does not extend to olive oil (it’s a texture thing, not a taste issue).

For Valentine’s Day, I put together a punny card featuring the Olive.

Conversation Hearts Garland

Silhouette Studio's Print and Cut feature lets you create cute heart garlands

When I first got my Silhouette Cameo, I thought it only cut, uh, silhouettes. Turns out it does a technique called Print and Cut which lets it do so much more.

The concept of Print and Cut is easy – you set up your artwork that you want to print, add lines to show what you want to cut, and then turn on these magic registration marks so that the Silhouette cutter can take the instructions from the Silhouette Studio software.

The only hard part of the project is taking a decent photo of the garland hanging in my back window. The window faces north, so it’s a pick your photographic poison of too much back light or a weird view of the neighbor’s yard. I promise it looks better in person!
