Baby Shower Cupcake Toppers

Cute baby shower cupcake toppers come together quickly using a SVG file designed for assembly line production | SuzerSpace

I’ve always been the go-to person wherever I work for personal projects. It always seems like someone needs a birthday invitation, a holiday card, and the occasional baby shower decoration.

But lately, I’ve been making baby shower items for the children of the people I work with. Which means that somehow they have gone from being the cute little kids who sometimes appeared in the office to adults about to have kids of their own. Which is weird, since I haven’t become one bit older!

In July I showed how to make a cake topper using my Silhouette Cameo. In theory, you could use the same process for baby shower cupcake toppers, but there are two challenges – 1) cupcakes are smaller, so you’ll be working with smaller pieces to align and glue together, and 2) while you normally have just one cake, cupcakes are usually served in dozens, which means more toppers to create.

So for this project, I set up my design to be more assembly line friendly. I can get 15 out of two sheets of 12 x 12 paper – 15 backs from one sheet, and 15 fronts from another. I know cupcakes are sold in dozens, but this way you have an extra one or two in case something goes wrong.

The two sheet method also makes it easy to create these in just about any color scheme. For the photo for this post I’ve gone traditional blue and pink, but you could mix them up to match the baby shower theme or the nursery colors if the mom-to-be has already started decorating.

If you’d like to grab these files for the baby shower cupcake toppers, I have them in my Etsy store. There are three designs: one for a boy, one for a girl, and one for a gender neutral (or gender reveal) party.

To make them, I put the paper color for the fronts on  my Silhouette Cameo mat and then sent the file to cut. Because I have two cutting mats, I was able to put the back color paper on another mat and send that to cut while I weeded all the fronts. If you don’t have two mats, it will just be a little slower going. In that case I’d probably cut the backs first since they’ll weed faster.

Once weeded, assembly of the baby shower cupcake topper goes pretty quickly

Once everything was weeded, I ran my tape runner over the back side of the front design, and then stuck a flat sided toothpick at the bottom, being sure it wasn’t visible in the cut out letters. I tried my best to center it left to right, and then carefully put the back piece on, pressing firmly. I like to go back and use my fingernail to press in along the sides of the toothpick to make sure it is stuck to the paper. If you are in the mood to glue gun it, that also works, but I hate to pick at all the strings from the glue gun, and since these are really pretty temporary I’m not sure it’s worth all that hassle.

It’s easiest to take the toppers and cupcakes separately to the shower, and stick them in once you’ve arrived – it’s hard to find a carrier that will accommodate the height of the cupcakes with the picks.

Pin this so the next time you volunteer or are volunteer-ed to help decorate a baby shower, you have the tools to create some great baby shower cupcake toppers.
