I am a recovering cardboard box addict. That means I recognize that I have a problem with hoarding cardboard boxes, and that I’ve asked someone (Mr. SuzerSpace) to hold me accountable.
It’s taken years, but I have finally let go of all the boxes in the basement that belong to things we don’t own anymore. And I’ve cut down and recycled the big boxes from the televisions, and I’ve given up all the shoeboxes that I was saving for “some project.”
We also have a firm “one in then one out” rule which means if I want to keep a new box I’ve found, I have to let go of an old one.
Last month I treated myself to a new leather work bag which came in a really sturdy box. You can see why I was super happy to save this pin.
It gave me a happy reason to find a box in the basement to let go of.
Sometimes you see a craft that looks so simple and you try it and yours comes out looking ridiculous. Not this one – from the genius idea of dampening the cardboard to get the layer to peel off cleanly to the tutorial on how to mix the paints, this craft is a winner. I’d never thought about making faux galvanized metal, but now that I have, I’ll never look at a cardboard box the same again.
It was quick, too. I don’t own any silver paint, but I think the gray, white and black version I’ve done here really does look like galvanized metal. And it certainly dresses up the clean, empty black bean can that is hidden inside.
I can also see potential for making different sizes of these to corral my pencils and markers. It’s a different look than the glass jars I’m using now and I think they would mix and match quite well. Kind of a recycled industrial look, I guess?
I recommend you check out Ananda’s post and clear some space out of your cardboard box pile by making some of these faux galvanized metal vases!

Susan, we must of been on the same wave link this challenge. I made a container out of a bean can. 🙂 I love your idea and think it was so creative. Will be pinning this for future crafts! Thank you!
You can’t beat an almost free craft especially when it looks so near the real thing.
How clever. It’s a great way to recycle those boxes that we all seem to save. Recycled Industrial sounds fancy! I like it.
Your cardboard box comments had me laughing, we end up with so many cardboard boxes in the basement that end up just being there. I can’t believe at first glance this was made out of cardboard, I’m still in shock. This is so unique, I love it!
I would never have thought that was made with cardboard! What a wonderful way to recycle. Pinned.
I see saved boxes in your future. All shapes and sizes. All to one day be turned into faux galvanized metal. For real. This is super creative. I actually see myself starting to save boxes just so that I can do this. Ugh and Yay!
I like the look. I like to work with cardboard, too. I’ll keep this in mind. I’ll bet it would make a nice mat for a photo.
I thought this was metal when I first saw your picture! Beautiful job!
lol! My husband hoards cardboard boxes – in case we ever move! (We’ve been in our home 16 years.) Your faux galvanized metal look great!
