Welcome to the February Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by My Pinterventures. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen!
If you’ve visited me here at SuzerSpace before, then you must have realized I really like lettering, and I really, really, really like to make things with the cardboard. So when this pin crossed my feed that featured both, you can guess that it was going on my “must make soon” list.
One picky note – the Pin and the post call these Embossed gift tags, but as a working member of the printing industry, I have to point out that these are actually Debossed. Embossing is when you press up an image from the back side and it stands UP. Debossing is the opposite – you press an image INTO an object. So mine are faux debossed gift tags!
Francesca at Fall for DIY created these using specialty duct tape, but I’m more of a #usewhatyouhave kind of crafter, so I went with the tried and true silver kind. We have a big roll of the super duper sticky stuff that lives in the basement, right near the dryer vent that cannot be easily connected to the basement window. The evildoer who previously owned our home made several very interesting decisions (ask me about the built in cabinet for a refrigerator that is not a standard refrigerator size some time).
My favorite craft stock of a cereal box is just perfect for these – thin enough to cut easily, thick enough to not get all bent up once finished.
Following Francesca’s tutorial, I cut the cereal box into rectangles narrower than the width of the tape. I then hand lettered initials, and cut them with a sharp craft knife. If your letter has a counter (that’s the inside part of the “P”, for example), don’t lose that part.
Cut a long piece of duct tape and lay it, sticky side UP on the work table, and then carefully place the card on it, being sure to keep it straight, and leave extra tape top and bottom. If you have a counter to your letter, place it back in now. And then fold the tape over, sealing the sides. I used my Silhouette Cameo scraper to firmly stick all the flat parts tother. I used my fingers and the back of my Silhouette Cameo hook (the round part, not the sharp part) to define the debossed areas of the letters.
It was a little tough to hole punch through the two layers of sticky tape and the cardboard, but I muscled it out.
The original intent is to make faux debossed gift tags, but wouldn’t they look great in that faux marble contact paper as labels for a pantry? Zip ties are what I’m thinking about for attaching them to my wire baskets that hold spices and canned goods and snacks.
Pin this if you’d like to make your own faux debossed gift tags.

I have a couple cereal boxes in the basement & this would be fun to make. What a great way to reuse something & I always try to do what I can with what I have.
I would never have guessed that those tags were made from duct tape!! Those are really cute; I could see using decorative tape at Christmastime for each family member’s gift. Pinned.
Beautiful gift tags! It’s great you were able to upcycle everyday items for your tags.
Duct tape? Huh, who would’ve ever thought? A nifty idea and project. Thanks for the DIY.
Well, I learned something new today. I would’ve mistakenly called these embossed instead of debossed. Thanks for the great tutorial! Very clever!
I love how easy this project is! Pinning!
This is a great and simple way to dress anything up. I know even some little girls who would just love to have one of these made for them!
What a unique way of making debossed tags using duct tape! Love the look!
Love the gift bag ideas. Pinned
This is my kind of craft and it serves a good purpose too. I will Pin this so I can make a few to use on gifts. Love this idea.
Cereal boxes! Wow, that is amazing. I would not have believed it if you didn’t tell us.
So cool! Did you also paint it after? The texture looks different from the tape.
Hi Erlene –
No paint needed. I think the texture changed from smoothing it down tightly to the cereal box.
It is true. Duct tape is to fix it/make it what bacon is to food. Just makes everything better. I think That’s a great idea to add to pantry. Especially like the zip tie touch.
chipboard box + duct tape = awesome tags Genius! My brain is now buzzing with all kinds of ways to use these. pinning -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
I am going to get the cereal boxes straight away! #happynow@_karendennis
Very clever idea. I can imagine these would be great at Christmas to add to packages. I like the idea of trying this technique for my scrapbooking, too. Always amazes me what all of you gals create from almost nothing!
So clever! I have never made anything like this, but you made it look so easy. I can’t wait to give it a try!
Super cool! I think they turned out great. I can tell you enjoyed doing it 🙂
This tag looks so cool, I had no idea it was duct tape!
I love these! So trendy and I’m always here for a creative upcycle since there’s so much we throw away. Featuring when my party opens up tonight!
They are awesome! From only the hero Image I never could have guessed how they are made. I have a fun leopard print tape I think would look awesome. I really need to put this on my list, too!
