Welcome to the third Tuesday of the month (What? How is that possible?), which means it is Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop Time hosted by My Pinterventures.
The purpose of the Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen!
Sometimes I like to work on really intricate crafts with lots of pieces, measuring and patience. And other times, I really just want to do something that looks to be really easy and fun.
Enter this month’s pin –
I’ve had it on my board for a while, with a bunch of other painted rock pins.
Side story – Mr. SuzerSpace and I like to walk to a neighborhood grocery store on Saturday mornings. The route takes us past some of those Little Free Libraries and a super cute little stand that is called “The Art Tree” which operates on the take-a-penny leave-a-penny principle in that you are supposed to leave an object of art if you make one, and take one when you need one.
Conveniently, the stand is near a schoolyard full of rocks.
I think you can guess where this is going.
The pin on the painted monster rocks I liked is pretty short on instructions, but like I said in the beginning, I was looking for a super easy but satisfying craft project for a Sunday afternoon. I base coated some of my rocks black, and others white.
Quick tip – that silver container holding the white paint? It’s the top of an Absolut Vodka bottle. Some people like to buy craft tools at Michaels. I like to buy them at the liquor store and call it “upcycling”.
Because I liked the look of the painted monster rock in the pin that looked like it was wearing pants, I used painter’s tape to mask off about halfway so I could paint the top part white.
Rocks are super porous, so it took a couple of coats to get good coverage.
I let them all dry overnight and then added details with colored Sharpies. Some of the colors were absorbed in the rock and I had to go back with metallics, but in the end, I ended up with a couple of new painted monster rock monster friends, ready to share at the Art Stand on my next trip.

Oh, how cute! I especially love the charming bow tie. It makes me think of an old ZZ Top song, “Every girl’s crazy about a sharp dressed” monster! 😉 -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
What a great theme song for him! I may have to make a little sign explaining that for when I leave him at the art stand.
He’s so handsome! I love his little bowtie!
The bowtie in the original pin is what caught my eye, too, so I made sure to include that detail in my version.
The handsomest monster rock I’ve ever seen; digging the bow tie!
So cute! We have a community of rock painters that leave designed rocks like this at local parks, playgrounds and along hiking routes to spread smiles and cheer to others. There is something pretty relaxing about painting rocks. My boys and I made pet rocks one summer and we had a ball with them. Pinned.
I had spent the day before working through accounting and plumbing projects around the house, so yes, I have to agree that painting rocks is VERY relaxing.
This is the cutest painted rock. He looks so dapper with the bow tie.
What a fun project! And I love the idea of the “art tree” – such a great idea to share art/crafts and get some new ideas along the way!
They are brilliant. I love painted rocks, I even have a section of a pinterest board dedicated to them. Do you know how many rocks I’ve painted with all that pinning – 3, just 3!! I’m adding this fella to my board just in case I actually paint some more one day!
What a fun idea! I love the bowtie!
Super fun! My grandsons would love this! They could paint the rocks but don’t quite have the fine motor skills to do the faces, so one of the adults could manage that. Pinned for later when I’ll be with them.
So cute!! Thanks for sharing with us at the To Grandma’s house we go link party!
Such a handsome monster! I wish we had something like that nearby, it sounds really neat. 🙂
I love painting rocks. So far I only created patterns and no characters. Will try that soon. Thanks for sharing!
My sister-in-law shared a post about painted rocks for the garden. How fun would it be to create garden monsters, LOL. Your guy is fun, quirky, and just enough monster. My middle school student would enjoy doing something like this. Perhaps a trip to the beach is in the future. Pinning.
How fun! I would love one of those art tree spots in our area. It would be so fun to create things and leave it for others. Did anyone take your rock art?
Someone did! I dropped the two rocks off in the morning on the way to the grocery store on Saturday. They were still there on the way back, but we rode our bikes by on Sunday and they were gone!
That’s so neat! If I had one of these boxes, I would be leaving stuff in there all the time…lol.
