It’s the third Tuesday of the month, so welcome to the December Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by My Pinterventures. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen!
We moved into this house right around Christmas in 1998, and things were so chaotic we didn’t even have a tree. We strung some lights on a dying potted plant and concentrated on unpacking boxes and getting moved in, and called it good.
Our house isn’t very big, and we needed a slim tree to fit the space without overwhelming the living room. Good ones were expensive, but I kept on watching the sales and eventually found something perfect for us. And then I realized at the last minute that I didn’t have a tree skirt, so I bought this cute buffalo plaid throw with moose and bears on it, scrunched it up around the base of the tree and called that good, too.
And that has worked perfectly, for nearly 20 years, mostly because I always think about doing something more coordinated on the day we are setting up the tree, which means it doesn’t get done.
So I was pretty happy when I spied this pin:
Because I knew the pin title of $5 was going to be a super big overstatement on what I was going to spend on finally finishing up my Christmas Tree Skirt situation.
The Crazy Craft lady steps you through the project, but the premise is easy once you see it – you need a big cardboard circle to sit under your tree that you then gather the material up and around to give it some shape, instead of just being scrunched around the base. She goes the extra mile and adds some fiberfill stuffing to give it more oompf.
Conveniently, we get these super big chipboard packing pieces at work, so I figured I’d be set for the big circle. Right up to the point where I thought about the size of my car, and so I took a little left turn on the project and cut my chipboard in half and taped it at the center.
This makes it easy to transport, and even easier to put under the bed or in a closet for the 11 months out of the year when you don’t need it.
Instead of purchasing fiberfill stuffing, I used an old pillow that was not good enough to sleep on but was still hanging around in the linen closet (everyone has one six of those, right?).
And just like that, my Christmas tree skirt looks like I meant it to be that way, not a last second (18-year-old-second?) afterthought.

Super cute and easy too. I just made a new skirt for ours, last one was homemade too, and lasted 30 years. I may have to make this one too.
Your skirt looks great! ‘Very clever use of pillows from the linen closet! 😉 Now I know why I have so many in there. The Christmas Tree needs them! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
That is a really cute and clever idea! Pinned.
A clever and homey idea for a tree skirt for an arctic island tree that doesn’t need watering. I like it for the 3 four foot trees I have in bedrooms.
Arctic island?! I thought I typed artificial lol!
Actually, before I fixed the skirt, that tree was kind of on an arctic island!
The throw is adorable and makes a great tree skirt. I love plaid at Christmas time.
I’ve been looking for a good, easy “tree skirt”. This looks like a great way to decorate the ugly tree stand!
This is such a smart idea. I didn’t do a skirt this year since I changed themes and I’ll keep this in mind for next year.
Love this easy and different way to do a tree skirt. The fabric is very pretty!
I think this is a great tree skirt idea! I’ve never seen a tree skirt done this way, but it’s very pretty. I love the throw you used. Pinning! Oh, and I like the burger and robot ornaments on your tree!
Thanks! The burger is a longtime fave. The robot is new this year. But our very favorite is the ray gun. It actually makes those awesome “pew-pew-pew” noises.
It turned out great! I’m afraid we just have the poor bare legs on our tree and I hope no one notices! I think I could manage something as simple as this though.
What a terrific idea. Every year I tell myself I will make or buy a tree skirt and never do. I like this idea because it is so easy and I have everything.
For such an easy project the end result is awesome! Very clever of you to use found items for the bottom circle and filling.
