While I love to browse Pinterest, I’m acutely aware that not every craft has to be swoon worthy.
Sometimes I spend a minute being just crafty enough to salvage something that’s not as it should be.
Case in point – my very well worn keychain. The first winter after I bought my car, the dealer had an online contest for guessing the day of the first measurable snowfall. I entered, and ended up winning a nice prize package that included a knit hat, a water bottle and a keychain, all emblazoned with the carmaker’s logo.
That was 6 years ago, and my keychain has definitely seen better days. It isn’t really leather, and bouncing around in the bottom of my work bag or being shoved in my pocket has made it very tattered and sad looking.
I really like projects that start at the point of “well, can’t really make it worse” since they rarely disappoint.
Originally I was going to salvage out the metal bits from this keychain and make something similar to this project over at Sum of Their Stories. But when I flipped the keychain over to figure out how to get the metal rings off, I saw this tiny screw.
Conveniently, I have a set of small screwdrivers, so I took it off, and the damaged piece came out easily.
I carefully unfolded the fake leather part and used it as a pattern to cut a replacement out of a scrap of felt.
I then folded up the new piece and tucked it back into the metal, and reinstalled the little screw.
And now my well-worn keychain is good for another couple of years!
Pin this in case your keychain starts to look worse for wear and you want to give it a quick and easy upgrde.
