Just like May, June has sped right by here at SuzerSpace.
It’s become really hot, really fast, but that is how the summer rolls in Kansas City. At least we get fire flies (my very favorite bug if you are keeping score at home) and hummingbirds to keep us entertained.
To beat the heat, we generally respond by getting up earlier and then hiding in the afternoons. I whine about the heat all the time, even though the only time I’m really exposed to it is walking across the parking lot at work in the evenings.
The heat also means we don’t really start too many too many new projects, but that’s OK – I don’t mind coasting through the summer.
Currently, I’m:
Reading
A co-worker recommended Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat and I really enjoyed it. I checked it out through the e-library, and devoured it (pun kind of intended, sorry 🙂 ). And it’s one of the few books I’ve read in a long time that I’m considering actually purchasing.
As a follow up, I’m currently reading An Everlasting Meal. Neither is really a cookbook. Both are more like classes that take you through the actual science and craft of cooking, with some great anecdotes and descriptions of meals. Plus a few recipes thrown in to point you in the right direction if you wanted to practice what you just learned.
Crafting
My online lettering class has moved on to the tricky bit of connecting letters to form words, and I’m finding it easier than I feared. The leader has put together a very fun Instagram challenge of a series of crazy words and I’ve been faithfully practicing and posting each day.
I’ve decided that my goal with this is to be able to hand-letter my holiday cards this year. I have a phrase picked out, and I’m practicing it every day as well, since it may take me another six months to get that ready for prime time viewing.
Summer List Activities Update
True to my list of the three things things I wanted to concentrate on, we’ve taken way more bike rides. Mr. SuzerSpace got a new bike at the beginning of the month, and I got a spiffy new bell that looks like an eyeball (can you tell we might not be the most serious riders?). We’ve found new routes that make it possible to get to Trader Joe’s, Aldi, and most importantly, the liquor store.
On the watercoloring front, I’ve moved on from birds to dogs and cats. I love the little “step by step” drawing tutorials you can find on Pinterest.
The purging the house program? A little stalled. Digging through piles of winter clothes trying to decide what stays and what goes turns out to not be an effective way of cooling off. So I’ve redirected that energy to taking working through a boring list of banking activities that have been ignored forever. I can do those mostly from the air conditioned comfort of my sofa/laptop!
