This is the fifth of  a series of twelve paper ornaments I’m making this year, one a month so that when December rolls around, I won’t be surprised to discover I’ve done nothing about my wish to have a fully paper crafted Christmas Tree.

I’m really a simple crafter. Upcycle projects make me happy. Kids crafts litter my Pinterest boards. And turning strips of scrap paper into Christmas Ornaments is my new obsession.

The possibilities are nearly endless – thicker strips make a more covered ball, while thinner ones make a more open design. Do them all in the same paper, or mix it up.

This is also a great craft for your little helpers.

You’ll need four strips of paper, all the same height for each ornament ball. You’ll also need two brads, and little bit of twine.. Tool wise you need a single hole punch. I cut my paper strips with a paper trimmer, but scissors or an X-acto knife would work fine.

The height of the strips determines the size of the ball. The width determined how open or closed the final ball is. The only key to success is to have all the strips in one ornament be the same height.

Once you’ve cut the strips, punch a hole in the center of all of them. And then punch a hole at each end. My hole punch won’t punch through more than one at a time, but I used each one as the template for the next; the closer the holes line up the more uniform the ornament will be when finished.

Thread your twine through one brad, and then gather all the strips onto that brad through the center hole. Spread the ends on the brad so it is tightly holding the strips.

Then turn the whole pile over and overlap all the ends onto the second brad. I find it easiest to form them into a tight ring when I do this step.

Finally, spread the rings around evenly to form the circle shape.
