To create my tissue box cover, I started with a box of tissues. I took measurements off the box, and then drew up a rough die line in Adobe Illustrator.
And then I drew on my VW bus inspired details. This wasn’t designed to be a super artistic rendering, just something fun that captured the spirit of that iconic vehicle. I found a few nice renderings on the Internet that gave me the rough idea of what what I wanted to draw.
To construct the box cover, I was going to need glue flaps. I added 3/4 inch glue flaps to each piece (except the top – that’s what everything is glued to), and then positioned them on separate pieces of paper for printing.
Since this is an old-school vehicle, I’ve gone old-school on the assembly – I didn’t use my Silhouette, but instead printed this and then cut and scored it by hand before gluing it up.
My trick for this kind of construction is to print the art on one side of the page and the die lines for scoring and cutting on the other. That way, the die lines end up on the inside and no one ever sees them.
I cut the various parts using an X-acto knife, and then scored them using a ball-tipped scoring/embossing tool on a soft mat.
I used a quick drying white glue on the glue flaps and glued the pieces together.
Paper clips make great clamps. Just be sure to not get glue on them, or they become a permanent part of the box.
Once everything was dry, I dropped it over my box of tissues.
Stay tuned for the whale version 🙂
Love all things VW bus as well, and this is certainly easier than a crocheted or plastic canvas version! Imagine all the time we’re saving! thanks so much for sharing on craft schooling sunday, great to have you!
It’s kind of hard not to love the VW bus, isn’t it?
